A friendship begins

WHEN teachers and pupils from SK Cheras Indah (SKCI) sent in their application to be a part of the APEC Learning Community Builder School Network Project (Alcob), none of them expected their school to be chosen, let alone have the chance to host a delegation from South Korea.

“When we heard a Korean school was coming to visit us, we were shocked. None of us ever imagined we would be receiving a visit from a school overseas!” said the school’s senior assistant (co-curriculum) Baharuddin Yasir.

Nine pupils and two teachers from Songhwa Elementary School (SES) in Kangwon Province, South Korea arrived in Malaysia recently for their four-day visit.

“Quite unbelievably, there are only 24 pupils in SES. Mass exoduses to big cities have caused populations in small provinces in South Korea to dwindle.

“These pupils are the children of those who chose not to migrate,” said Baharuddin.

According to SKCI senior assistant (administration) Rosmimah Embi, each Korean pupil will be paired up with a pupil from the school.

“The SKCI pupil’s family will become the SES pupil’s foster family for the duration of their stay.

“They will provide the Korean pupils a roof over their heads in addition to giving them a taste of warm Malaysian hospitality,” she said.

In her opening speech during the handover of Korean pupils to their respective families Rosmimah said,

“Foster families should take this opportunity to learn Korean culture and language while sharing our culture with them.

“This is a great chance for us to transcend differences between Malaysians and Koreans and develop a lasting relationship between the two schools.”

In his speech, SES headmaster Im Hak Sung said that both schools represented their respective countries and should be proud to do so.

“I hope that both parties will have meaningful cultural exchanges,” said SES teacher Jang Yong Joon, who translated for Im.

Jang explained that the Korean pupils, aged 12 and 13, were eager and excited to get to know Malaysia.

SKCI teacher Donna Kwan Wai Mun said the school was one of seven Malaysian schools who sent in photo presentations for a chance to take part in the project.

“I helped create the photo slides that SKCI sent to Alcob and it was a welcome surprise to be chosen to host the Korean delegation,” she said.

Kwan added that there was no special funding for this project and that the Korean delegation’s trip here is also self sponsored on their end.

Teachers attend Trinity College English workshop | BorneoPost ...

It was set out to give teachers guidelines in integrating exam preparation with classroom activities and at the same time furnishing them with ideas on how to practise speaking English in the classroom.

Nigel McEwen, a visiting examiner from Trinity College London, conducted the workshop.

The representatives (teachers) were from SRK Sri Mawar, Riam Road Middle School, The Lighthouse Centre, Pusat Tuisyen Medan Jaya and the English Language Centre Kuching.

During the two-hour workshop, through a series of video presentations and Q&A sessions, Nigel enlightened the audience with his topics, ‘Lesson plans for your classroom,’ ‘Tips and hints to get your students talking’, ‘Ideas for integrating exam preparation with classroom activities’ and ‘How to motivate your students to use English to discuss their experiences’.

“It has been very useful to get ideas on how to get our students to speak English in the classroom,” said Lesley Linggod from Sri Mawar School.

“We also got ideas on how to motivate our students,” added Gary Sim, a teacher from Riam Road Middle School.

In Miri, nearly 100 students from Riam Road Middle School and Sri Mawar School took the Trinity College London Grades Examination in Spoken English. Both schools achieved 100 per cent pass rate.

Students taking the exam learn to make presentations in spoken English, focusing on the accuracy of their spoken language and their ability to interact with the examiner on a range of conversation topics.

The Trinity College London Grades Examination in Spoken English is internationally recognised around the world as an indication of competence in spoken English.
