Duluth East basketball star has bad luck in Las Vegas
Johnny Woodard’s good luck ran out in Las Vegas. The Duluth East basketball guard, a senior this fall, reinjured his left shoulder two weeks ago in the Las Vegas Fab 48 tournament for top-level prep players.
Woodard put out his arm to break a fall to the court and injured a shoulder that was dislocated in May during an Amateur Athletic Union tournament in Milwaukee, East assistant coach Will Starks said Saturday.
An MRI was performed last week, and Woodard is expected to have surgery this week to repair a torn muscle. He’s not expected to return to high school basketball until January or February. Last season, the 6-foot-4 Woodard averaged 26.5 points and 9.5 rebounds a game as East advanced to the Minnesota Class AAAA tournament with a 22-7 record. He was named the 2011 News Tribune All-Area Player of the Year.
“If Johnny had to face a serious injury, it’s best that it happened now rather than during the high school season,” Starks said. “He can get healed, get better, get stronger and give us a push at the end of the season.”
When Woodard dislocated his left shoulder in Milwaukee, a doctor advised surgery and a six-month recovery period. A second medical opinion suggested four to six weeks of therapy after the summer season, which allowed Woodard to go to Las Vegas.
Woodard has attracted NCAA Division I interest from Wisconsin-Green Bay, St. Louis, the University of Houston and Minnesota.
