Kids enjoy big top fun
Children had heaps of fun trying out circus skills as this year’s Summer Reading Challenge got under way in libraries across the Dales.
The circus skills workshop with colourful street-theatre group Artizani was just one of a number of events at Matlock libaray as part of the annual reading challenge.
A spokeswoman for Derbyshire County Council said: “The children enjoyed circus skills workshops with Artizani - a street theatre group from the High Peak who showed them how to juggle and balance a peacock feather on their chin, elbow or feet. They also took part in a cartoon workshop.
“We had lots of children take part, including quite a few from St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Matlock.”
This year’s challenge, on a Circus Stars theme, is for children aged four to 12 to read six library books during the summer holidays, collecting stickers and giveaways along the way.
Other events include author talks, cartoon workshops and craft sessions.

Foolish Muncaster Fun every day in August : Cumbria Crack News
Kids and adults alike will be kept entertained all day long courtesy of past and present Fools of Muncaster; with music, magic, acrobatics, juggling and general tomfoolery.
In addition to the performances, there will be chances for budding young entertainers to learn a few tricks of the trade themselves, as circus skills workshops with the experts will be on offer with chances for children to try plate spinning, juggling, and many other skills.
Fools of Muncaster are chosen at the International Jester Tournament that is held each year to find the latest successor to Tom Fool, the original jester at Muncaster more than 400 years ago.
This year’s Tournament saw the title go to Japanese ‘extreme unicycling’ duo Witty Look, who were a real hit with Muncaster’s crowds.
Muncaster Castle’s Peter Frost-Pennington says: “August at Muncaster is always such great summer fun as we get to bring back some of our star performers and see them do what they do best – delighting crowds – every single day.”
As well as the foolish entertainment, Muncaster’s feathered highlights will also be on show with the World Owl Trust’s daily Meet the Birds shows at 2.30, and Heron Happy Hour at 4.30.
