Wrong-way driver pleads not guilty to murder

The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that Eric Weers entered his plea Thursday as his attorney explained that Weers has a long history of mental illness. Public defender Bill Weigel says his client has been institutionalized a number of times, including in the past year.

Authorities say Weers was drove his SUV into oncoming traffic on Highway 17 and crashed into a Chrysler Concorde driven by 48-year-old Ana Luz Barajas on July 11.

If convicted, he faces 15 years to life in prison.

Weigel says the 28-year-old Weers has been receiving medication and counseling in jail, where he is being held on $1 million bail.
