There is always new technology. When should we care? How do we take advantage ...

Dan Bricklin invented the calculus, among other things. In this talk, he shares the knowledge gained to produce software that people buy more than 40 years. A brilliant presentation of someone with absolutely nothing to prove in an industry, he played a major role in driving since the seventies.

My notes of the conference talk are here: http://thebln.com/2010/10/dan-bricklin-business-of-software/

Professional Software, Boston, MA, October 24-26

Joel Spolsky: Well, our next speaker needs no introduction so I will not present it.Please welcome Dan Bricklin. [Applause]

Dan Bricklin: Thank you, thank you. Uh, I followed, I was out of town until late last night, but I followed on Twitter and I realize that you guys have seen these great, great orators, so if I mess it is because you have already seen great stuff, which takes some of the pressure off. So I'll cover many I've learned over the years. Let's see, then I mean all, there are always new technologies. This is something that you can, to be able to serve you for a long time. When should we worry about new technologies and how can we enjoy it, because that's often how we make money and stuff and products and to do things like that. So I'll try to touch on a lot of that. And I will try to apply a kind of methodology.

What have I learned over 40 years? Um, it's been over 40 years to develop products that use other people, ay-yay-yay. How many people have developed for 40 years or more? [Laughs] Yay! I saw one or two, yay!Well, well, so I went to leave, the Apple II I was one of the most popular productivity of the Apple II and I have one of the most popular products on productivity iPad now. Okay? I wrote a little code for it, and I wrote all the code for it to be there. So, I own and between the One Laptop Per Child, I have a spreadsheet open source that I have and Social Tech it sells. So I'm on, whatever the technology is that I could have touched. Hmm, so I might be able to comment with a little knowledge, which is obviously dangerous. So when there are new technologies and new opportunities, you should ask yourself some questions like "What is this new thing for" You know this, and it is best to do a job that I will talk about it and how can I be sure that this is the right thing?

Handheld Gps Reviews: Handspring Visor Edge (Metallic Silver) Review

I bought my Edge through the Handspring Website because they weren't available any where else at the time.I've been happy with it, even thought the first one crashed, and they had to send me a new one. They sent the replacement next day air and I haven't had a single problem since.I bought the Edge instead of the Handspring Platinum because the Edge was quite a bit thinner and had an internal rechargeable battery so I didn't have to spend a fortune on AAA batteries. The Palm V is the closest relative to the Edge in the Palm family, but I thought that Handspring had a better product with their Springboard module.I've already purchased the one step back up module which works great when you're away from your computer. In addition, I purchased the InnoPak/2V vibrator along with a Handspring belt type carrying case so that I can wear my Edge and have it vibrate for appointments.I figure that if it's on my belt I'll get that much more utility out of it.The only thing that I don't like about the Edge is that it's a new enough model that I'm not able to get all the accessories for it yet like the Targus foldable keyboard and the travel charger/synch cable. In addition to such standard Palm OS applications as an address book, to-dolist, and memo pad, Handspring adds extra features such as an enhanced datebook, advanced calculator, and a world clock. Plus, the Visor Edge has new usabilityfeatures like Fast Lookup, silent alarms, wireless synchronization, addressduplication, improved security, and enhanced navigation. And since it uses thePalm OS, you can download thousands of Palm-compatible applications and beaminformation to other Palm users.
