Port Adelaide champion Tredrea calls for the priority pick to stay

The league is reviewing priority rules at the end of the season, potentially robbing Power of the free pick at the start of the 2012 draft, but Tredrea last night the club needed assistance.

"If anyone needs it, they do," Tredrea said.

"Maybe the AFL, if they look at Port and say 'Gee, they need some help', might buy some time.

"Do they abolish it after Port get the advantage?"

With AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou visiting Adelaide to talk to the Power and Crows, fear about the state of football in South Australia is at unprecedented levels.

Former Port star Josh Francou yesterday said the club faced a tough road back.

"They are in desperate need for some quality young players," Francou said.

"With the new clubs coming in and the compromised drafts, there were concerns about how that was going to spread the talent pool and make it harder to get your hands on some good young players. And the reality is that has really hit home for Port Adelaide.

"They just don't have access to top-quality youngsters. If they can't (qualify for a priority draft pick) then that would be a massive blow for Port Adelaide."

Port, embarrassed in a 138-point loss to Collingwood on Saturday night, will qualify for a free pick at the end of the first round if it wins four games or fewer.

If the priority rule survives the chop for another year, Port will qualify for a prized free pick at the start of the 2012 if it wins four or fewer again next season.

It would allow the Power to cash in similar to Melbourne in 2009 when two poor seasons in a row allowed the Demons to take Tom Scully and Jack Trengove.

But Tredrea indicated that the honest comments from sacked Melbourne coach Dean Bailey may not help the chances of the priority pick remaining.

"It depends on what the AFL do. Melbourne's situation is not going to help them," Tredrea said.

He said it may be harder for Power next year because they will have less experience.

"There's a lot of heavy lifting to do. There's no doubt (coach) Matty Primus is going to do everything he can to get it done and I feel sorry for the bloke," Tredrea said.

The Power's games record holder said free agency also loomed as a dark cloud on the horizon. Francou agreed.

"It's hard to entice good quality players to Port Adelaide to come over and play in South Australia," he said. "The talk about the financial problems and the big losses just makes it harder. It's a vicious cycle.
