Last year: Louis Oosthuizen won at St. Andrews, leading the final 48 holes and blowing away the field by seven strokes. The South African finished at 16-under 272. Lee Westwood was second.

Last week: Steve Stricker holed a 25-foot birdie putt from off the 18th green to win the John Deere Classic for the third consecutive year. The 44-year Stricker shot 66-64-63-69 to finish at 22 under and beat rookie Kyle Stanley by one stroke. Memorial also the winner last month, Stricker has won 11 PGA Tour - seven in the last three seasons. ... Top-ranked Luke Donald won the rain shortened Scottish Open, closing with a 9-under 63 for a four-stroke victory at Castle Stuart.

Notes: Tiger Woods, who won at St. Andrews in 2000 and 2005 and the Royal Liverpool in 2006, is sidelined by leg injuries. ... In the first two majors of the year, Charl Schwartzel won the Masters and Rory McIlroy took the U.S. Open. ... In 2003 at Royal St. George, Ben Curtis won in his first start in a major, beating Thomas Bjorn and Vijay Singh by a stroke. Bjorn got a spot in the field Monday when Singh withdrew. ... Greg Norman won in 1993 at the course, the first links in England to hold the British Open.

Altoona is home to this unlikely trio: Adventureland, Prairie Meadows and one of the 156 players teeing off in Thursday’s first round of the British Open.

Jason Knutzon won’t be hanging out with family and friends in his Venbury neighborhood this week. He’ll be at Royal St. George’s in England, playing in golf’s oldest major championship.

In a typical year, the 35-year-old Iowa State graduate would be spending his summer at home — “obviously the best time in Iowa,’’ he said — and taking a break from his full-time job playing the Asian Tour. But Knutzon also qualified for the European Tour this season.

He’s splitting his time between the two tours, which is cutting into his traditional summer schedule.
