Residents attack plan to remove parking bays

A COUPLE have launched a campaign group to tackle parking problems in Wargrave.

Nathanael and Jemima Reid are angered by Wokingham Borough Council’s plans to remove eight parking bays from the High Street.

The experimental traffic scheme, which may last for up to 12 months, will begin in August when the current roadworks and High Street resurfacing is completed.

In a bid to improve safety in the village, double yellow lines between the remaining bays will force residents to use the School Lane car park at a cost of �40 for three months.

The couple, who have lived in High Street for seven years, have attacked the council for not consulting residents about the plans.

Mr Reid, 41, a freelance sound recorder, said: “The plan is an absolute disgrace and the assumption that it will only create some inconvenience is presumptuous in the extreme.

“The council will be making an already outdated parking system and road problem that much worse and I would love to meet the people who think this is a good idea. This experimental order is a ludicrous waste of time and money.

“I absolutely believe that any experimental solution must not go ahead until it has had the full involvement of those people that actually live here.”

Mr and Mrs Reid have recently put their flat up for sale to accommodate their expanding family. They have a two year old son, Zachary, and are expecting their second child.

Mrs Reid, 30, said: “We don’t know if we will be able to sell. This is a residential High Street and there are lots of families with babies and small children.

“Things are dangerous here at the moment but HGVs should not even be coming down the High Street.

“People also mount the kerbs on a daily basis to save them time. If the pavement was raised this would not be possible.”

Mrs Reid, who has started a petition to present to the council, said she received considerable support from residents and shop owners. She claimed cars left in the School Lane car park were open to vandalism.

Michael Carver, of Victoria Road, Wargrave, said: “I don’t think that this order is going to create any change.

“If people pull in these little spaces between the bays to stop and let traffic through, other motorists are not going to realise that they have pulled over, they will think that they have parked.
