Bad Squirrels Pushes the Boundaries with Kinkwords Puzzle for iPhone
San Francisco, California – Bad Squirrels has announced KinkWords Puzzle 2.0, the sexually themed crossword puzzle in the App Store. Following an increase in submissions of iPhone apps containing what Apple has referred to as “very objectionable content,” the company responded by removing thousands of these apps from its App Store. Philip W. Schiller, head of worldwide product marketing at Apple, told the New York Times: “It came to the point where we were getting customer complaints from women who found the content getting too degrading and objectionable, as well as parents who were upset with what their kids were able to see.” However, despite Apple’s best efforts to curtail apps it considers objectionable, there continues to be a steady stream of developers submitting such apps and an equally eager audience willing to download them.
Today, the remaining sexually themed apps, which withstood Apple’s “Project Clean Sweep,” have a disappointing lack of edginess in common. This is readily echoed in almost all of the frustrated low-star customer reviews: dirty joke apps that “aren’t really that dirty,” sexual position apps which use stick figures for illustrations, copy upon uncreative copy of novelty shop sex dice apps, etc. Most of these apps are of low production value, completely lacking in humor, and as a result of the App Store review process, have had their sexual content drastically toned down. All of these factors result in apps which are boring, watered down, clones of each other.
New game developers, Bad Squirrels, did not see Apple’s policies as an obstacle, but rather as an opportunity. Taking a radical new approach, they decided to cater to the very demographic which had been complaining about sex apps in the first place – women. Avoiding the use of sexually explicit images, Bad Squirrels instead developed a dominatrix character, which symbolizes female sexual empowerment that appeals to both men and woman. Coupled with the utilization of sexually charged words and sounds they created a uniquely stimulating sexual, yet humorous, experience, which could never be labeled as strictly gratuitous.
Creative Director and co-founder of Bad Squirrels, Donovan Joyce, had this to say about KinkWords: “At the end of the day, our app is much more creative and edgy than any game of its kind – we have what is arguably the only sexually themed game in the App Store.
