Favorite Family Boredom Busters for Rainy, Unexpected Days at Home
I have a good friend who has hardly ever let her kids spend a day at home during any school or summer vacation despite the weather, how tired she is or how much it is costing her.
I try and get my head around this because after all, we parents are only human and running around to keep the kids busy just because they have a day with nothing scheduled seems nearly impossible, never mind ridiculous. (Sorry my friend!)
When she’s asked why there can’t be a lay low, hang-out-at-home day with the kids, she’s quick to share that she can’t stand to see them bored and since she isn’t the crafty type, her kids end up bickering and fighting with each other and she therefore nearly loses her mind.
Our Gansett Mom’s Council members can totally relate to this scenario. While some families can cruise their way through an unexpected day at home, others panic at the mention of a rain storm because they don’t want to be stuck in the house with cranky kids that go on and on about having nothing to do.
Here are some of the ways our council members spend days off both at home or in the community.
Board Games and Spa Day
CJ Tudino and her son enjoy the tried and true in-town favorites such as bowling, roller skating and the movies, but when the budget is tight she shares the following ideas for making their own fun right at home.
“We love to play games, games and more games! Apples to Apples , imagine iff, Yahtzee , Scrabble and cards. If we invite friends over we pair up the young kids with adults or older kids, so they know how to play like pros by the time they are 8 or 10!”
“Also big in our house is spa day and believe it or not, the boys get into too! Set up stations with face cloths, foot massagers, ginger ale or sparkling cider and play cool music and everyone gets a facial and some cucumbers on their eyes — the works! It starts off as a silly way to spend some time, but when we are done, everyone feels a little bit pampered and it breaks the monotony of watching movies or reading a book.”
“There are also times we feel like being competitive so we put on the Wii and both the adults and kids do the dance revolution of bowling. It is a lot of fun!”
“Finally, don’t forget about the local library for a down day — always with a smile, showing the kids that rainy days are not so bad and can actually be some of our best times. It truly is all in how you approach it!
