Justin Timberlake Technology Investments Now Equal Three
Justin Timberlake apparently took his role in the Social Network seriously.
The pop singer-turned-geek is now a major investor in three technology startups: Stipple, Myspace, and according to the latest news, Dekko .
Dekko, Timberlake, and Augmented Reality
According to sources who talked with Silicon Alley Insider , Timberlake invested in a company called Dekko, which is still in “stealth mode.”
Though few details are known about what the company will do, it’s apparent that it will be involved in augmented reality, a technology that enhances reality with computer-generated sensory input.
Here’s how Dekko cryptically explains its technology on its site:
“Dekko is pulling back the curtain that separates the online world from the real world. No longer will we need to rely on text, icons, lists or maps to experience what is right in front of us. We will see and interact with characters from parallel universes walking amongst us. We believe that mobile, social and local services should not only bring you real benefit, but should also be fun. We believe that the more visually engaging a medium is, the more it will supersede prior mediums.
Dekko is building a platform combining technology from several domains including the military, computer vision, research labs, gaming and mobile services to change the way you look at the world.”
Dekko, which is also backed by technology investment firm Venture 51, is set to launch sometime in 2011, according to Silicon Alley Insider.
The amount of Justin Timberlake’s investment was not publicly disclosed.
Myspace: Jumping into a Sinking Ship
Timberlake announced that he had bought into Myspace, the abandoned-party of a social network in early July.
No specifics have been released on the plans for Myspace, but the new owners, brothers Tim and Chris Vanderhook and Timberlake, are looking to focus the site specifically as a platform for artists to reach out to their fans.
“Justin is a tremendously bright guy who is really passionate about the opportunity for artists to build a community with fans,” Tim Vanderhook said in an interview with Los Angeles Times . “He’s excited about the platform and the ability to interact with his fans. He’s well aware of the all the unique opportunities that digital media affords someone like him. He will use the platform himself and show other artists how to use it.

But this isn't the first time Myspace has tried to stage a comeback. In October of 2010 the site announced a new layout that was supposed to revitalize interest by focusing on entertainment media–namely, television and–this sounds familiar–music.
