Victim of poor planning, faulty design

LUCKNOW: Gomtinagar, the posh residential colony, has become infamous for pot-holed roads. There are three glaring reasons behind the non-commutable roads in this locality — use of inferior material, faulty design and lack of proper traffic census.

"It's the strata analysis which matters the most,'' former PWD chief engineer Sushil Kumar said. According to him, before construction of any road, analysis of soil should be done. "Accordingly, the compaction and layering is done, otherwise there remains a void which expands and eventually the roads develop cracks. With time the cracks get wider,'' he said. Also, a traffic census should be taken up so that minimum strength required can be ascertained. "But in Gomtinagar or elsewhere, roads are probably being constructed on a trial and error basis,'' he added.

While additional municipal commissioner PS Bhadoria, who is in charge of engineering section at Lucknow Municipal Corporation was unavailable for comment, PWD engineers said probably the format of road construction was not followed in Gomtinagar.

The pot-holed roads in Gomtinagar's Viram Khand, Vipul Khand and Vishwas Khand present a pitiable sight. These roads were constructed only six months ago but have now become non-commutable. "The road was constructed only a couple of months ago. But things are back to square one,'' MS Kalakoti, a resident of Viraj Khand, said. He said recently two motorcycle-borne youths fell on the road when the front wheel of their vehicle got stuck in a deep pot-hole.

However, when it comes to 'VIP' roads in Gomtinagar, authorities do not compromise on quality. The 28 metres wide road along the Ambedkar memorial has not shredded a bit despite heavy flow of traffic. Even the Lohia Path is an example of quality road construction. But roads inside the colony are a complete contrast. The Gomtinagar Jan Kalyan Mahasamiti has been raising the issue of better roads with the municipal corporation for past two years but in vain. "The worst part is that the authorities do not respond,'' mahasamiti president Brikeshwar Tewari said. "It's a colossal waste of public money when you construct a poor quality of road,'' he said.

The society had also set an alarm when it pointed out indiscriminate digging of roads by private telecom companies. "They did not pay adequate compensation to the LMC. But the latter did not even bother to pull them up. Is it not corruption,'' Tewari asked.
