Pearl's services wanted by D-League team

DALLAS — The D-League Texas Legends have "put together the most aggressive package the D-League has ever seen'' in their pursuit of ousted University of Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl, Legends owner/Dallas Mavericks GM Donnie Nelson tells us. And ''aggressive'' is the right word in terms of the team's approach, as Nelson has scheduled a press conference and a Legends happy hour event featuring Pearl — in advance of him having even interviewed for the job.
 
There is no agreement in place, though Nelson tells DallasBasketball.com and FOXSports that it's "obviously a good sign that he's coming to town.''
   
"When a team affiliated with the world champions of basketball calls, it's definitely worthy giving a listen,'' Pearl tells the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
 
An offer to Pearl follows the approach Nelson has taken with his embryonic franchise, which is based in the DFW suburb of Frisco and employed in its front office iconic basketball names like Del Harris, Spud Webb and Nancy Lieberman, the pioneer who in the team's successful inaugural season this year served as the first NBA-affiliated female coach in men's basketball history.
 
We're told the Legends' marketing and sales department already has in place a promotion to sell tickets to the "Pearly Gates" section, and as Nelson insists, "This Pearl is worth it!''
   
The puns are awful. The chronology is odd. (The presser that was scheduled for Wednesday has been moved to Thursday afternoon; Thursday evening, Pearl is scheduled to participate in a happy hour event with the Legends at a Frisco restaurant.)

And as to whether Pearl is "worth'' what Nelson will pay? That might depend on your view of his soiled reputation at Tennessee, where he was dismissed on March 21 amid accusations of NCAA violations. But from a DFW perspective, the biggest story here is that Donnie and his freshly-crowned championship-level people don't mess around, do they?
    
Pearl, who led Tennessee to six consecutive NCAA Tournaments, is a colorful sideline presence and a masterful recruiter. He's also a candidate to work in television.
"Being a commentator would be fun, and I have had some interest in that,'' he tells the Memphis paper. "But that's also something I could always do later in my career.
