Building blocks

"Positive" and "negative" affixes.

MOE coordinator sent me an email as follows: "One of my colleagues came across an article online on words or phrases that have only negative connotations, such as disgruntled, disheveled and deranged," and asked if I would be interested in writing an article on the subject. Even before the suspicion I had long thought about the very subject and I was wondering if it would be of no interest. Heck! Whatever. So the next pitch.

To begin, I would like to word construction in perspective.A word can be built - here I put a full stop to separate the elements forming the word - as follows: (1) combination of existing words to form a new word, for example cease.fire, god.send, show. down, (2) linking combining shapes or words stems (psycho.logy, the Greek psyche, "breath, soul, mind" + logos "word, reason, discourse"), (3) the adding a prefix or prefixes to an existing word (in.com) or a word-stem or combining form (pre.dict, from the Latin prae, but pre-combined "before" + dicere, saying "say") and (4) affixing the suffix or suffixes, of an existing word (like.ly) or a word-stem or combining form (cordi.al, from the Latin cor, Cordes-"heart" +-al ").

Table 1 lists some of the affixes that have a negative connotation or private, with examples of words formed with it and Table 2 lists the affixes with the opposite connotation.

The words and their opposites

There are several ways that words - whether they are nouns, adjectives, verbs, or - with positive and negative meanings can occur. These include: (1) using different words, for example, full / empty, functional / deceased, presence / absence, accept / reject, active / passive, awake / asleep (2) the affixing of a prefix to an existing word, for example to / from the UN to do, to interpret / MIS interpret, start / DIS board, (3) affixing different suffixes for an existing word, egworthy / worthless, (4) adding different prefixes for the same stem word or combination of form, for example

FAQ:

- How can I change the speech speed?
The speed of the speech is controlled by the TTS engine installed with Android. It can be set up by going to:
Settings --> Voice input & output settings --> Text to speech settings --> speech rate
- Why does the application take several seconds to load?
The first load requires getting all the words from the internal database. This may be slow on some older phones or very fast in newer phones. Once started, the application performance is excellent.
- How can I change the speech language?
Just go to Menu --> Settings and select the language. Currently, 3 languages are available:
* French (France)
* English (US)
* English (UK)

DISCLAIMER:
The text-to-speech (TTS) technology may not be available in some devices. To check if your phone is able of speech synthesis: Menu -> Settings -> Voice input & output -> Text-to-speech settings.
If not installed, your device may ask you to install the TTS engine. An internet connection may be required. We recommend installing it before traveling as roaming data tariffs may be very expensive.
