Boutique desktop PC vendors typically offer you a wider range of customization choices than major manufacturers do, and that convenience is worth taking advantage of. But prebuilt systems from these vendors can be just as good, as iBuypower demonstrates with its Gamer Power BTS11 ($999 direct). This special back-to-school model delivers an Intel Core i5 CPU, a Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti video card, lots of RAM, and a helping of ports to connect old and new devices. You can find faster entry-level gaming computers, but even if you don't want to select additional, more powerful parts, the Gamer Power BTS11 is a good performer and a good value.
Design and Features
The Gamer Power BTS11's white NZXT Phantom case is a rather angular and imposing chassis—perfect for more boisterous gamers—that has plenty of space to house lots of internal components and, along with its vents and fans, promote proper airflow. Wires and cables inside are intelligently routed, which gives the interior a clean look. The top of the case has one eSATA and two USB 2.0 ports, as well as headphone and microphone jacks. In the back of the chassis are a slew of ports: one PS/2 (for legacy mice and keyboards); four USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0; analog audio jacks and S/PDIF for digital audio; VGA, DVI, and HDMI (the last for connecting to HDTVs and large-screen monitors); Ethernet; and legacy serial and parallel. The USB 3.0 and eSATA ports provide faster data transfer speeds between your computer and compatible external hard drives; but there's no built-in Wi-Fi, so you'll have to connect to the Internet via the Ethernet jack unless you want to install an expansion card.
Cracking open the system requires just loosening a few thumbscrews. Inside, the Gamer Power BTS11 offers plenty of room to grow: There are two open PCI Express (PCIe) x1 slots, two regular PCI slots, and a second PCIe x16 slot wired as x4. (The first holds the video card.) Two of four RAM slots are free, as are internal SATA ports; the 700-watt power supply should be sufficient for running most modest collections of components. The Gigabyte GA-P67A-D3-B3 motherboard supports CrossFireX technology rather than SLI, so if you want to install multiple video cards you'll need to pull out the Nvidia card and use AMD hardware instead. Also, additional PCIe cards will cause the second PCIe x16 slot to run at x1 rather than x4, further reducing performance. A DVD burner is located behind a hidden door in the front of the system (sorry, there's no Blu-ray drive or card reader), and a 750GB hard drive gets you off to a good start storage-wise. A basic keyboard and mouse are included, though enthusiasts will find Logitech and Razer products available during the customization process.
