Remembering Johnny Podres

"I've picked up some really great stuff from baseball that I can share right here in the town of Moriah," said Pat Salerno Jr. 

He has been collecting baseball cards since he was a kid, but having a hometown hero in the major leagues was a game-changer.

"Johnny was so good to me that's why I started this huge collection," said Salerno.

Johnny Podres might be most famous for his 1955 MVP World series title, where he helped the Dodgers win their first World Series.

Although it's a football field now, Johnny Podres learned to play baseball right here at Linney Field. In 1995 his hometown commemorated the 40th anniversary of his World Series MVP title by naming this field after him.

Saturday the town held it's first annual Johnny Podres Day.

"It proves that a small town boy can make it big if you work hard at something," said Salerno.

Pat Salerno Sr. played against Johnny Podres in high school.

"Every other player I faced in the league was good but Johnny was exceptional," he said.

Podres passed away two years ago.

"We all miss Johnny, we all love Johnny, he was great for the town of Moriah," said Pat Salerno Sr.

The Salernos wanted to share their memorabilia with the town to honor the local legend and family friend.

"I just love that they don't forget about my husband," said Johnny's wife Joan.

She hopes her husband's legacy is more than just as a player in America's past-time.

"I want him to be remembered as a wonderful person first, very good to his family," she said.

Podres legacy will live on, as a small-town ball player turned World Series champion from a community that wouldn't be the same without him.

Have you been collecting sports cards since you were a small child? So have I. I have in my possession a Babe Ruth card that I purchased on eBay that I would never get rid of because it is one of my most prized possessions. Another way to display your cards is to have a plexiglas box made and have a mount placed inside of it for your card. These types of displays are not that expensive since plexiglas relatively cheap. You can even have designs etched in to the glass with words or letters.

If you go online you can find many sports card display tools for sale. These include baseball card display cases for individual cards, small collections and graded cards.

Last but not least we will talk about your options for displaying your collection. If you have a small room in your home then the best way you can go about displaying your cards is to use shelves. Of course with plaques all you must do is hang them, but you may want to do it in such a way as to be decorative. For example you could have your plaques framing your shelves. If you store your cards in binders, shelves work great for storing them. Consider binder slipcovers to keep the albums from falling over and potentially damaging the cards.

If you have a large office or room to work with then go all out! Create long shelves that can hold your entire collection if you want. Utilize a frame and matte to display your very best cards in and around an 8×10 photo or other memorabilia item.
