TREASURES — Superior is the next stop on the Treasure Hunters Roadshow world-wide tour. During this event at the Holiday Inn Express, our treasure hunters are hoping to see items such as coins and paper currency issued prior to 1965, toys, dolls, trains, vintage jewelry, old and modern musical instruments, war memorabilia, gold and silver jewelry, costume jewelry, advertising memorabilia, swords, knives, daggers, and the unusual. The free event runs 9-6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 9-4 p.m. Aug. 13. Local residents get a chance to talk to world-renowned antique and collectible experts. Duluth: Get your running shoes on and head to the Lake Superior Zoo as it hosts the second annual Run Like an Animal 5k run/walk. The entry fee is 30 prior to race day, $35 on race day, and includes zoo ticket, t-shirt and refreshments. The proceeds benefit the Lake Superior Zoo. Superior: Barker’s Island Farmers’ Market runs 8 a.m. to noon near the SS Meteor, rain or shine.
Superior: The sixth annual Twin Ports Lakefest runs noon to 8 p.m. at Barker’s Island featuring performances by Lightswitch and Seventh Day Slumber, food, games and prizes. Free, but bring a nonperishable food item for the food shelf. Visit www.twinportslakefest.org.

The 2011 MRHS gathering is a departure from standard conventions of prior years as all events will take place on Saturday and the date is near the end of August. This was done mainly due to the fact that the Convention Chair position has gone unfilled and your board of directors have not had any volunteers step forward. The date change was done to accommodate use of the Lake Superior Railroad Museum and steam locomotive 2719, with earlier dates in the month having other activities booked for the museum.
