With his finger on the pulse and his eyes on the future, SEGi group managing director Datuk Seri Clement Hii shares his insights behind the rise and rise of SEGi.

AFTER making investors gasp with their surging stock prices, the SEGi Group was back in the headlines last month after announcing a big move to Perak.

Dubbed the SEGi Enclave, the ambitious project would alter the state’s educational – and infrastructure – landscape by featuring a state-of-the-art campus, recreational facilities, on-campus residences and retail outlets on a 24ha plot of land.

Estimated to house 8,000 students, 500 academic staff and 700 support staff, the Enclave’s impact was talked up by Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and when the ambitious project is completed in two years, SEGi will enhance its position in the industry.

Speaking to The Star on the venture, SEGi managing director Datuk Seri Clement Hii shared the Group’s big plans for its Perak campus.

“The Perak enclave will be a key addition to our existing six campuses as it will cater primarily to students from the northern states,” he explains.

“Ipoh has a lower cost of living compared to the Klang Valley and this could be a big pull factor as students will receive a similar provision of quality education.”

Similarity is the key word in this case as the Perak campus will be a smaller replica of SEGi’s main campus – architectural design included.

Being Malaysia’s largest private provider in higher education – boasting with around 24,000 students and a market capitalisation of RM1.3bil inclusive of warrants – SEGi’s move was – in many ways – akin to an industry powerhouse extending its reach.

However, Hii stresses that things were not always as rosy and one has to look back no further than 2001 – the year the SEGi brand was coined – to see this.

The merger of the Systematic Education Group (SEG) and the PRIME Group had taken place – the latter completing a reverse takeover of the listed SEG – and uncertain times were ahead.

At that point of time, both education groups were past their prime – no pun intended – and it was Hii’s job to ensure the new entity enjoyed reversed fortunes.

Turning back the clock, Hii recalls that it was quite a tall order as deciding where to start was a challenge by itself.

“We had so many brands after the merger that even I got confused,” he jokes wryly. “The advertising budget was huge and there was a need to consolidate.
