Streator Township High School students will be able to withdraw money from a checking account, purchase their lunch and deposit the change into savings all within a school day.
That is, as long as they sign up to be customers at the Streator Onized Credit Union-sponsored and student-employed Bulldog Credit Union.
The STHS Board of Education approved the in-school credit union Tuesday. It will be in the concession stand in the commons during morning and lunch time hours starting next school year.
"It's going to help a lot of kids," said Chelsie Sharisky, STHS senior and work program employee at Streator Onized. "I know someone who has to go to the bank every morning to get her lunch money."
The portable branch will employ three work-program students at $8.25 an hour and a Streator Onized employee will oversee the operation. All equipment will be locked in the school's library and the money transported to a secure place. Students and staff will be the only ones allowed to bank there.
The idea is to not only provide services to students but mostly to educate them about finance.
"All in all, it's about providing better financial literacy and education that will help the community in the long run," said Angie Kusnerick, one of the leading organizers from Streator Onized. "We want to make them better savers and better borrowers."
The credit union plans on supplementing the branch with educational programs and presentations in classrooms and assemblies.
Student employees will be trained to answer basic financial questions and direct students in the right direction for loan applications, credit cards and other products.
"Students will be more likely to learn from one another during school hours than to visit a bank," said Sharisky, who plans on majoring in financial management. "Kids don't want to come to adults for advice, but they'll be willing to talk to each other."
The in-school location and hours also will give more students an opportunity to participate in the work program. In the past, students active in sports or after-school events would not be able to do both.
"They can get on-the-job training right here in the school that they'd normally have to work outside of the school to receive," said Chris Peterson, STHS work program coordinator. "It's an unbelievable opportunity that only a select number of schools have in the state.
