The Change-Up Review

The "body switch" genre of comedy has been around for a long time. You either get the version where two people switch ( Freaky Friday , Like Father, Like Son ) or the tale of someone rapidly changing their age to either become a kid again ( 17 Again ) or see what being an adult is like ( Big ). However, none of them have been quite as dirty as The Change-Up , the newest R-rated comedy from David Dobkin. Dobkin knows his way around R-rated comedy. The man made Wedding Crashers after all. But that was six years ago aind since then he's made Mr. Woodcock and Fred Claus . The Dobkin that directed Wedding Crashers as able to expertly blend raunchy humor with funny one-liners into a classic comedy. The one that directed The Change-Up seems merely interested in dick and fart jokes for the sake of it. In this film Jason Bateman plays Dave, a workaholic lawyer who neglects his wife (Leslie Mann) while tending to his job and kids. He's a good guy, he just has too many things on his plate. Ryan Reynolds plays Mitch, a man-child that has sex on a regular basis when he's not smoking weed and playing video games (I assume). The two get drunk together and spontaneously decide they want each other's lives. It happens, and they immediately regret it. What follows is a barrage of curse words and jokes about a man having what feels like three balls. It's the worst kind of raunchy comedy. Obviously R-rated comedy is great if you're doing it right. Just this year both Bridesmaids and Horrible Bosses proved that. The Change-Up takes the worst parts of the genre and puts them onto the screen without any of the humor. I give you the opening scene of the movie, which is supposed to give us a look into the life of Dave. He has kids, and has to change them. In the first five minutes of the film we see the genitalia on both the boy and the girl, and then a shot of the young toddler's butt moving before a stream of fecal matter splatters all over Jason Bateman's face, and into his mouth. Did you think that was funny? I sure didn't. I don't see the reason for extreme closeups of a child's private parts in any movie. There's just no point. There are some bits of vulgarity I did enjoy. For example, there is a moment where Mitch tells Dave not to blow his acting gig. The gig in question turns out to be softcore porn. The difference between the opening scene and this one? The context.

I wouldn’t normally do a PSA for a movie but I’ll make an exception on this occasion as, tucked away at 11:25 PM on BBC2 tonight, is the UK network premiere of one of the best films I’ve ever seen.

Winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2007, The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen) is set in East Berlin in 1984 and follows an officer of the secret police assigned to spy on a playwright and his actress girlfriend.  The late Ulrich Mühe as the officer is spell-binding, and I genuinely cannot praise the film enough.
