Images of disaster on social media: 2

[ABOVE: On July 29, 2011, a social media user in China posted this photo of an empty car on the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Rail, noting: "Comrades, this is Car Two on the high-speed train departing at 4pm today." Twenty percent of seats were reportedly vacant on the high-speed rail before the July 23 crash. Now, confidence in the system has apparently plummeted.] ― In a recent TV program, Chinese economist Larry Lang (郎咸平) spoke with Guo Meimei (郭美美), the young woman at the center of a scandal implicating the Red Cross Society of China, and her mother, Guo Dengfeng (郭登峰). The "Guo Meimei affair" has drawn anger in China since June, when web users shared posts in which Guo Meimei, 20, claimed to be the "general manager" of the Red Cross Society of China. It seems that she was casually offered a position by Wang Jun, a family friend who runs a commercial entity such as has been authorized by the Red Cross Society of China to business activities related to charity. Guo Meimei and her mother are wealthy, and where that wealth comes from has recently been a key question. In the interview with Larry Lang, Guo Dengfeng said that she made millions trading stocks in the 90s starting with just "tens of thousands of yuan." It so happens that is possible -- but it would make Guo China's shrewdest investor ever, says Lang in this piece. Doubts persist. ― Xin'an Evening News reports today on the tragic death of a 3-year-old girl in the city of Anqing (安庆) in China's Anhui province. According to the report, Zhu Yan (朱颜) bounded onto the school bus on the way to kindergarten at 7:45am, just as always. Her parents received a phone call from a teacher at 7:45pm saying that she had been mistakenly shut up in the school bus all day and had died of suffocation. The story has been shared actively today on China's microblogs. Here, for example, is the post on Caijing magazines official microblog account: http://bit.ly/oJvVbq  ― Chinese media report today that Ministry of Railways chief Sheng Guangzu (盛光祖) warned at a forum this week that railway project construction must keep to planned construction periods based on "scientific" assessments and must not be expedited. For weeks now, but particularly since the July 23 high-speed rail crash, the ministry has been harshly accused of rushing projects to completion and disregarding safety concerns.
