Dauphin County trophy buck among highlights in new Pennsylvania Big Game ...
A 13-point buck taken in northern Dauphin County last November is featured as the new No. 4 typical white-tailed deer taken with a firearm in the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s just released “2011 Pennsylvania Big Game Records.”
“Nearly 300 new entries are part of this edition of Pennsylvania Big Game Records,” said Program Coordinator Bob D’Angelo./p
“Among the new submissions is the new No. 1 for typical elk taken with a firearm, by Domenic Aversa Sr., of Woolrich, N.J. Aversa took the 7x7 elk with a spread of 52 inches, that measured 387 and seven-eighths inches, in Elk County during the 2010 elk season.
“Also new to the list is the No. 4 on the typical white-tailed deer taken with a firearm, by Jeff Sitlinger, of Peachtree City, Ga.”
A native of Elizabethville, Pa., Sitlinger took the 13-point buck that scored 182-0/8 inches on Nov. 29 – the first day of the 2010 firearms hunting season for deer – near Loyalton in northern Dauphin County.
Antler scores are derived by measuring various aspects of a deer’s antlers under guidelines established by the Boone and Crockett organization.
The same system is used by the Game Commission’s Big Game Scoring Program, which prior to Sitlinger’s buck being officially listed the top four typical bucks taken in Pennsylvania as follows:
No. 1, score of 189-0/8, taken in Bradford County in 1943 by Fritz Janowsky, of Wellsburg, N.Y.
No. 2, score of 184-6/8, taken in Greene County in 1974 by Ivan Parry, of Graysville.
No. 3, score of 182-5/8, taken in Blair County in 1951 by Chester Allison, of Harleysville.
No. 4, score of 180-4/8, taken in Sullivan County in 1931 by Floyd Reibson, of Forksville.
When he measured the antlers, D’Angelo, who has scored hundreds of deer antlers, described the antlers from Sitlinger’s buck as having “a lot of mass.”
In addition, he noted, the antlers lost only 6-6/8 from their total score due to imperfections, “which is hardly anything on a rack that size.”
Sitlinger hunts in northern Dauphin County as part of Camp Swamp Hole near Loyalton. That’s the same group that includes Ed Bechtel, of Loyalton, who at about 3:45p.m. Dec. 3, 2009, in the Greenland section of State Game Lands 210, which extends along Peters and Broad mountains from Tower City to Loyalton, killed a 668-pound black bear.
