The 'Blues'

MANILA, Philippines — Every once in a while, a particular color interplays with the flow of our daily routine. Yellow, for example, was a dominant color in President Cory’s term, and now conveniently adopted by her son President Noynoy.

Yellow became their political and administrative identity. And with it the people were somehow influenced by the daily dose of the hue, one way or another.

But because of the claim by some sectors of the unwholesome things hounding the governance of the present Chief Executive, the yellow hue appears to be fading.

And now comes blue as the prevalent color hereabout in our midst. It is not a political color yet. At least not this early. But the blue tone seems to be casting a spell of influence on everyone’s frame of mind these days.

How did this come about?

Blame it on the adverse findings unearthed – and the public indignation that has ensued – by those probes of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee (BRC).

For one thing, the committee has come up with sort of a transportation mania, for example. From the so-called “Pajero Bishops” to “second-hand helicopters.” And there is a likelihood the BRC will get into the ramifications of the R1.7-billion public relations budget of the PCSO more than a year ago. It will also go ahead sipping the taste of the R1-billion brand of coffee at Pagcor.

Incidentally, the Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is one of the few very expensive coffee varieties available in the country. It is served in UCC coffee shops.

And a word of caution to motorists who routinely violate traffic rules: Watch out for the Blue Boys. They are the now-you-see-now-you-don’t blue-uniformed MMDA traffic officers.

In sports, it is Ateneo’s Blue Eagles basketball team that is the current leader in the UAAP cagefest. Have you noticed that the Azkals look invincible in their blue – with white stripes – uniform? A few years ago, one of the “winningest” baseball teams in the American League was the Toronto Blue Jays.

But the blue hue can also be used in a metaphor like, “As blue as the deepest ocean”; or, “The skies and the blue yonder.” And still, blue can be the color of sadness or heartache.

For example, a line in an early 1960s hit song goes, “Blue star when I am blue, all I do is look at you.” Of course, the same lonely original melody “Blue Moon” was an international favorite as sung by Mel Torme.
