Clay County elementary school undergoing removal of asbestos
Traces of asbestos found in a local elementary school are causing officials to scramble to remove it before the start of school.
When renovations were being done to Lizemore Elementary last week, contractors found something that looked "suspicious" under some of the floor tiles in the upstairs of the building, according to Clay County assistant superintendent Danny Brown.
The discovery prompted maintenance director Robin Holcomb to step in and conduct some testing of the upstairs level of the school. After Pinnacle Environmental Consultants tested the samples, results overturned on Friday showed the presence of asbestos in some of the floor tiles and linoleum upstairs.
Now the asbestos is being removed, but Brown says that it must be done with haste because of the looming start of school slotted for Aug. 15 for teachers and Aug. 18 for students.
"We're on a tight timeline trying to get it done before school starts," Brown said.
"We did not anticipate hitting asbestos upstairs."
About 1,782 square feet of tile was shown to have asbestos underneath in the 59-year-old school. Some asbestos was found in floors of the lower levels in the 1980s, Holcomb said, but that was simply covered over and checked every three years.
"I also do a six month surveillance report to make sure no body has messed with it or fooled with it or disturbed it in any way to cause a heath hazard," Holcomb said.
Crews from Dan Hill Construction are removing the asbestos, which is costing about $9,000, according to Brown. After it is all removed additional air quality tests must be done before the building is deemed safe.
It was not clear Wednesday if the air quality tests would be complete by Friday.
