FishOn! fishing report
A school of walleye north-northeast from Shades Beach in Lake Erie is producing excellent fishing. Get into depths of 70 feet to 90 feet. Farther east, walleye have been hitting off McCord's Point around the 110-foot contour, and east of North East Marina, outside the Mountain. Moving west, walleye fishing has been quite consistent off the point of Presque Isle and westward past the condos in depths of 72 feet to 90 feet. Walleye fishing has been consistent, but only fair, off the Walnut Creek Access Area in 65 feet to 70 feet. Farther west in the Elk Creek area, the better walleye fishing has been at 70 feet to 80 feet. Some walleye have been caught from shallower water. Trollers have been using some wild color patterns, including Hot Pants, Nuclear Green and Watermelon. Maybe most important is having some green in the pattern.
Perch schools tend to move around. Perch anglers fishing out of Shades Beach have enjoyed good results at a depth of 54 feet. That same depth has been best off Freeport. Try slightly shallower, 50 feet to 52 feet, off Twenty Mile Creek. Boats launching in and around Erie might be getting the best perch fishing. Straight out from Walnut Creek, get into 54 feet to 57 feet of water. Off the western end of Erie County, perch are just about everywhere starting at 52 feet and deeper.

Another fisheries biologist fishing off Bush Point on the west side of Whidbey Island says the humpies (a term the male fish receive for a distinct hump that grows on their back at spawning time) were "rolling all over the place" this week.

Anglers are already allowed to keep up to two chinook salmon in the waters around La Push and Neah Bay (Marine Areas 3 and 4) but wild coho must be released in all four areas.
Anglers were originally limited to one chinook to avoid shortening the season.
“But after five weeks of fishing, enough of the quota remains to allow anglers two chinook per day in the four marine areas without exceeding the recreational catch quota,” Pat Pattillo, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s salmon policy coordinator, said in a prepared statement.
Marine Areas 2, 3 and 4 are scheduled to continue through Sept. 18, while the Marine Area 1 fishery continues until Sept. 30.
SALTWATER
Fish derbies: The seventh annual Salmon Derby Day starts this morning at 8 at the Point Defiance Boathouse Marina. There will be prizes for children and on-land activities including music and food for those who don’t want to fish. There will be a free trout fishing pond for children. The event is $30.
The boathouse also hosts the Puget Sound Anglers Salmon Derby on Aug. 13. The event is $25. For more information on both derbies call 253-591-5325.
Tacoma: The staff at the Point Defiance Boathouse Marina reports that fishing is OK. The best bites are in the morning. Try trolling for kings and pinks near Dalco and the Clay Banks.
South Sound: The fishing has been best for those trolling with bait or hoochie and spoons at a depth between 50 and 100 feet. Try the water near Lyle Point, Tolmie State Park, Devil’s Head or Fox Island.
North Sound: “It’s the peak of salmon season and I’d say it’s been fair but not fantastic,” said Mike Chamberlain of Ted’s Sports Center in Lynnwood. “But we are seeing the first of the humpies and it’s going to continue to escalate.”
LAKES
American: Kokanee and perch fishing has been good here lately. David Anderson of Bill’s Boathouse says some anglers are catching their kokanee limits in 20 minutes.
Spanaway: Fly fishing has been good on the lake, said Bud Herlitzka of the Spanaway Park Boat House. Herlitzka says still fishing fairly deep with Power Bait on the southeast side of the lake is a good way to catch rainbows. Trout are also biting for those trolling slow and deep on the lake’s south end .
Washington: Anglers are doing well catching yellow perch, but otherwise action is slow.
