A semi-truck driver from Canada is sitting in the Tehama County Jail on $500,000 bail after a police dog reportedly sniffed out 25 pounds of cocaine in his bigrig.
A California Highway Patrol K-9 reportedly alerted on the cab of Baljinder Singh Gill's big-rig as it was parked at the CHP Cottonwood Inspection Facility on Interstate 5 in northern Tehama County on July 28, said Eric Maher, commander of the Tehama Interagency Drug Enforcement task force.
The task force assisted CHP in confiscating 25 pounds of cocaine.
Maher said the big-rig, hauling corn and melons, was seized pending asset forfeiture proceedings.
"This was a very significant bust," Maher stated. "The drugs had a street value of nearly $1 million."
He said the 29-year-old Gill was traveling northbound on the freeway with a destination of British Columbia.
Gill has pleaded not guilty to felony charges of transportation of a controlled substance, possession for sale of a controlled substance, and two special allegations.
During a bail hearing in Tehama County Superior Court, Gill's bail was reduced to $500,000 from $4 million.
He returns to court on Aug. 16, for a preliminary hearing.
