I have been trying to lose weight for years, and my lack of success has been bothersome. But after listening to President Obama and the congressional Democrats for the last few weeks talking about the debt ceiling, I realize that I have been all wrong about my weight [“Obama signs debt bill after final Senate vote,” Seattletimes.com, Aug. 2].
After the Democrats explained baseline budgeting, I have decided to do a baseline diet. For this year and the next 10 years, I have predicted that I will gain 30 pounds a year.
So, if this year I gain only 25 pounds, I will have lost five pounds according to my baseline diet. Who cares about the increased risk of heart attack and stroke, that’s down the road a ways.
And let’s say I gain 25 pounds next year, and a friend that I haven’t seen in two years comments on my weight gain. I will say, “You horrible Republican. Do you want me to starve to death? I will have you know that I have lost 10 pounds according to my baseline diet.”

Cuts should affect all
I believe the American people should cut the salaries and privileges of members of Congress by 50 percent as a result of this miserable debt fiasco they have put us through. Only that is going to make politicians again realize that they are elected to serve the people, not just their party.
They are most agreeable to cutting benefits for the poor, sick and elderly, but no mention of decreasing their pay and privileges. Shouldn’t the cuts affect all Americans?
